Abbe Pierre was one of France's most popular figures. For a time he was a monk and later a priest. His life's calling was to serve the disadvantaged, in particular the homeless. He led a varied and fulfilling life. During the second world war he helped save Jews from deportation. After the second world war he set up a charity Emmanus to campaign for shelter for the homeless. He also sought to give renewed hope for the downtrodden so they would be able to work out their own problems and difficulties.
