1. Improved Security. Defeat viruses and spybots A recent report about dangers of online fraud by Vint Cerf suggests the internet is subject to many security holes. It is estimated that of the 600 million computers that are connected to the internet, up to 150 million are part of botnets, with many of the users being unaware of the dangers. see: BBC news stories
This is a very strong reason for getting a Mac. Based on a Unix operating system they are built with security in mind. Viruses are not a problem. Macs are designed to work from the start rather than Microsofts approach which is to try and offer patches after the security has been breached. There are 1,000s of viruses and spy ware online, even with the best anti virus software there is no guarantee of protection. Microsoft’s new vista has been acclaimed for being much improved, however already cracked copies have already been put into circulation. A word of warning cracked copies of software are far more likely to have Trojan horses already pre installed.
- My PCs periodically breakdown requiring the hard drive to be cleared and then put back on. Very time consuming and a real pain. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to do it.
- Design is very good. I like the curves of Apple and really like white computers.
- New Features. Computers have inbuilt video chat, for speaking over the internet with Video Cam. My mother would like that one.
- Windows can be run at the same time. Apple have enabled you to run programs which need windows. You can also continue to use applications like Microsoft Word
- Increased speed the new Intel Core duo is very quick. My current Dell laptop can take 15 minutes to warm up and get going.
- New applications and features. The best software is already preloaded saving time and preventing your computer getting bogged down with unnessary drivers and programmes which take up too much disk space.
- the Apple iBook can be taken anywhere preventing the need to get a separate laptop and home computer.
