My first mortgage was a self certification mortgage. I was happy to get a mortgage because I needed to borrow 7 times my proveable income. The problem is that the interest rates are not particularly competitive. At the moment I am on the Standard Life's standard variable interest rate, but I would like to get another more competitive deal. There are many different types of mortgages available and I will be looking for the best quote. However I think it will still need to be a self certification mortgage.

In looking for a remortgage quote the most important aspect for me is minimizing monthly payments. I would be quite happy to get a 50 year mortgage if it meant lower monthly payments. The important thing is that monthly mortgage payments do not increase in line with inflation. Over time their real value decreases.
